Preface

‘Trăng Lên Đỉnh Núi’ art showcase centers on a poetic theme inspired by the natural beauty of the Kinh Bắc region, a landscape deeply embedded in Vietnamese collective memory through the image of the moon rising over mountain peaks. This motif symbolizes hope and reunion, while also reflecting the charity journey to Lai Châu, where the moon’s gentle light guides the path to bring warmth and mooncakes to children in the highlands.

The showcase unfolds at a peaceful hilltop sanctuary in Northern Vietnam, where renowned Vietnamese artists, Ngô Thành Nhân, Phạm Việt Hưng, Trần Thái, Nguyễn Thị Minh, Trần Thị Phúc, and Nguyễn Văn Chuốt, come together for a live painting session on opening day. Guests are invited into the creative process as the artists draw inspiration from the surroundings and Senna Wellness Retreat’s spirit of natural healing and renewal.

Beyond this, the showcase exhibits a diverse collection of works by the 06 artists, from masters of traditional lacquer techniques to accomplished oil painters. Though created at different timelines, each piece conveys a shared message of honoring the mountainous landscape and cultural traditions, while expressing themes of family love, inner peace, and tranquility. Through vivid palettes and refined craftsmanship, the showcase blends realism and romanticism, inviting guests to connect deeply with Vietnam’s heritage.

Showcasing Artists

Ngô Thành Nhân (b.1956): Graduate of the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts (1979) and member of both the Vietnam and Hanoi Fine Arts Associations, Ngô Thành Nhân is recognised as one of Vietnam’s foremost lacquer painters. With over four decades dedicated to the medium, his award-winning works have been widely exhibited at home and abroad, with several preserved in the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts.

Phạm Việt Hưng (b.1958): Based in Yên Bái, Phạm Việt Hưng draws inspiration from the landscapes and people of Vietnam’s Northwest. A graduate of the Hoàng Liên Sơn College of Culture and Arts, his paintings vividly portray H’Mông and Dao communities, terraced fields, and highland markets. Works such as Cáng Chủa, Mẹ Tây Bắc, Mùa Đông, and Cấy Lúa have earned him national recognition, including a Second Prize from the Ministry of Public Security.

Trần Thái: Known for his impressionistic style and lyrical brushwork, Trần Thái captures the landscapes and life of the Việt Bắc region. His use of vibrant colours inspired by brocade costumes brings depth to works like Chợ Phiên, Mẹ Con, Lên Nương, and Ngày Cấp Sắc, which celebrate maternal love, community bonds, and the beauty of the mountains.

Nguyễn Văn Chuốt (b.1957): Used to be the Vice President of the Hanoi Union of Literature and Arts Associations and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tản Viên Sơn magazine, Nguyễn Văn Chuốt studied lacquer at the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts. Nicknamed the “golden hands,” he is admired for his refined, classical lacquer style using gold, cinnabar, black lacquer, and eggshell. Works such as Múa Bồng, Hội Vật Mùa Xuân, and Mai Châu Vàng showcase his warm and sophisticated aesthetic.

Nguyễn Thị Minh (b.1958): Nguyễn Thị Minh creates soft, pastel-toned works that radiate calmness and serenity. Her art has been described as “meditation within colours,” evoking quiet contemplation and inner peace. Each painting conveys tranquility and tenderness, offering viewers a deep sense of lightness and harmony.

Trần Thị Phúc (b.1964): A graduate of the Central University of Art Education and long-time teacher at the Hanoi Children’s Palace, Trần Thị Phúc is a member of both the Vietnam and Hanoi Fine Arts Associations. Working mainly in oil, she favours lyrical realism, portraying still lifes and nature, especially flowers, through soft strokes and bright, romantic tones.
